Late Night Eats

What if your reading goes late and all the restaurants in Pittsburgh seem to be closed or closing? Butterjoint in North Oakland (214 North Craig Street) is a popular gastropub attached to the upscale restaurant Legume; Butterjoint is open late hours for drinks and nosh. Eat N Park is a 24 hour restaurant on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill (think Denny's), and Ritter's Diner in Bloomfield is open nearly 24 hours.

Fabulous cafes in Pittsburgh (many serving food as well) include:Lili Coffee Shop, Te Cafe, Beehive Coffeehouse, Voluto Coffee, La Prima Espresso Bar, Espresso a Mano, Tazzo D’Oro Café, 61C Cafe, Commonplace Coffee Company, and Pittsburgh's own franchise, Crazy Mocha.

Hot spots for weekend brunch include Square Cafe in Regent's Square, Lili Coffee Shop in Polish Hill, Round Corner Cantina, Franktuary, or Coca Cafe on Butler Street, Pamela's in the Strip District, Zenith Cafe on the South Side.

Brillobox and Round Corner Cantina are two of the best bars in the city. The Squirrel Hill Cafe, aka the Squirrel Cage, is a local favorite. [I'll list more bars soon.]

Better-than-Bar-Food Served at Bars and Pubs

Recommended bars serving food include: TOAST Kitchen and Wine Bar on Baum Boulevard, Brillobox, Bloomfield Bridge Tavern or Tessaro's in Bloomfield, or Church Brew Works in Lawrenceville/Polish Hill area. D's SixPax & Dogz in Regent's Square has a variety of hot dogs and fixings along with a wide selection of microbrew beers.

Basic American: Diners, Lunch Counters, Pizza Shops, and Delis

Pamela's Diner has numerous locations and is renowned for their thin hotcakes and lyonnaise potatoes; Ritter's Diner is a late night favorite; Smallman's Deli serves great sandwiches at two locations, the Strip District and Squirrel Hill; and Franktuary serves brilliant hot dogs in Lawrenceville. On Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill, three pizza shops (here "slices" are smaller, cheaper, and called "cuts") in close proximity battle it out for local favorites: Mineo's, Aiello's, and Napoli Pizzeria. Spak Brothers Pizza has delicious pizza, hoagies, seitan options, and pinball, too.
